About Elowen

Hi, I’m Elowen. Welcome to Our British Kitchen.

A home for traditional British recipes, home baking guides, and kitchen conversion tools built from real cooking experience.

I grew up in the UK, and food was always at the heart of our home. Over the years that passion pulled me into professional kitchens, where I worked my way up and spent time cooking at a real restaurant level before eventually stepping back from that world.

Moving back into home cooking gave me a new perspective. The discipline and attention to detail from professional kitchens never left, but at home the priorities shift. Recipes need to work with ordinary equipment, realistic timings and whatever is actually in the cupboard. I spent a lot of time testing and refining recipes to meet that standard.

A few years ago, I started sharing my weekend baking and everyday British dinners online. I did not expect much of a response, but a community of home cooks began to follow along. The questions I kept getting were mostly about ingredient conversions and baking troubleshooting. That steady interest made me want to build somewhere with properly written recipes and reliable tools all in one place. That is what Our British Kitchen became.

Why Baking Measurements Matter (And How We Built a Better Tool)

When I started sharing British recipes with home bakers outside the UK, one problem kept coming up: measuring cups versus metric grams. Some general conversion charts use simplified values across ingredients, but that approach does not always reflect how baking ingredients differ.

A cup of plain flour and a cup of caster sugar weigh very differently from each other. Being 30 grams out on a delicate sponge is often the difference between a good bake and a disappointing one. Ingredient-specific values can make conversions more useful for home baking, so we wanted to create a straightforward tool that takes those differences into account.

How My Brother Came In

When I started turning recipe notes and baking conversions into useful online tools, I needed help with the technical side. That is where my brother, Kalana Wanniarachchi, came in.

Kalana works on the development side of Our British Kitchen, helping to build and maintain tools for ingredient conversions, oven temperatures and cake tin sizes. He also works on the technical improvements that keep the website straightforward to use across desktop and mobile.

I focus on the cooking context and the information behind each tool, while Kalana handles the software and implementation. That combination helps us turn practical kitchen problems into tools readers can actually use.
