Changing a recipe from four servings to six is simple mathematically, but doing every ingredient calculation by hand quickly becomes tedious. This recipe scaler works out the serving multiplier and applies it to each ingredient you enter.

The calculation is exact. The cooking behaviour of a larger or smaller batch is not always as predictable, so the tool keeps ingredient maths separate from decisions about pans, oven temperature and cooking time.

How the Recipe Scaler Works

Enter the number of servings in the original recipe and the number you want to make.

The calculator works out the scaling factor:

Desired servings ÷ original servings = scaling factor

Each ingredient is then multiplied by the same number:

Original quantity × scaling factor = scaled quantity

For example, changing a recipe from 4 servings to 6 gives:

6 ÷ 4 = 1.5

If the original recipe uses:

  • 200g flour → 300g
  • 250ml milk → 375ml
  • 2 eggs → 3 eggs
  • 1 tsp seasoning → 1½ tsp mathematically

Why Weights Are Easier to Scale

Weights are especially useful when a recipe does not scale to a neat half or double batch.

Dividing 300g by 1.5 is straightforward. Dividing an awkward cup measure or a small spoon measurement can be harder to measure accurately in a real kitchen.

If you regularly adapt baking recipes, working in grams usually makes the new quantities easier to reproduce.

Ingredients That Need Extra Judgement

The calculator always applies the same mathematical multiplier. It does not secretly change individual ingredients.

That is deliberate.

Some ingredients deserve extra attention when a recipe is changed substantially.

  • Eggs: A result such as 1½ eggs should not simply be rounded to two. Lightly beat the egg and measure the required proportion when precision matters.
  • Salt and strong seasonings: The calculated number is useful, but taste may not increase in a perfectly linear way when making a very large batch.
  • Chilli and powerful spices: Start with the calculated value cautiously if the change is large, then adjust the finished flavour where the recipe allows.
  • Yeast and raising agents: These ingredients affect structure and fermentation as well as flavour. Keep the original recipe's ratios in mind and be particularly careful with very large batch changes.
  • Thickeners: Cornflour, gelatine and similar ingredients may also need adjustment according to the final consistency you are trying to achieve.

For ordinary changes such as four servings to six or eight, the calculated amounts provide a sensible starting point. The larger the change, the more useful recipe-specific judgement becomes.

Cooking Time Does Not Scale With Servings

If you double a four-serving recipe to eight servings, do not double its oven temperature or automatically double its cooking time.

A deeper casserole may need longer. The same mixture divided between two dishes may cook differently. A half-size cake baked in a smaller tin may need a different baking time from the original.

Use the original cooking temperature unless the recipe or your chosen pan requires a tested adjustment.

Treat the original cooking time as a starting point and check the food using the appropriate signs of doneness.

Scaling Baking Recipes

Baking is particularly sensitive to ratios, pan size and batter depth.

Scaling the ingredient quantities preserves the mathematical ingredient ratio, but the new amount of mixture still needs a suitable tin or tray.

Scaling a Recipe Down

The same formula works for smaller batches.

A recipe serving eight people reduced to four has:

4 ÷ 8 = 0.5

Every ingredient is therefore multiplied by 0.5.

This is where fractional eggs and tiny quantities of spices or raising agents become particularly noticeable. Weighing ingredients is often easier than trying to divide awkward volume measures.

How do I calculate a recipe for a different number of servings?

Divide your desired number of servings by the original number of servings. Multiply every ingredient quantity by that result. The calculator performs both steps automatically.

Can I simply double every ingredient in a recipe?

Mathematically, doubling means multiplying each ingredient by two. That works well as a starting calculation, but very large changes can require extra judgement for ingredients such as yeast, raising agents, salt and strong seasonings. Pan capacity and cooking time also need separate consideration.

What should I do if the calculator gives part of an egg?

Lightly beat the egg, then measure the fraction needed rather than automatically rounding to the nearest whole egg. This is especially useful for baking.

Does doubling a recipe mean doubling the cooking time?

No. Cooking time depends on factors such as the depth of the food, pan size, oven behaviour and cooking method. Keep the original time as a reference and check for doneness appropriately.

Can I use this calculator for baking?

Yes, for ingredient quantities. For cakes and other bakes, also check that your pan has enough capacity and remember that batter depth can alter baking time.
