Butter Conversion Calculator
Convert butter between grams, ounces, cups, tablespoons and US sticks.
American recipes often measure butter in sticks, cups or tablespoons, while British recipes usually give the amount in grams.
This converter brings those measurements together. Enter any supported butter amount and the calculator will show the equivalent in grams, kilograms, ounces, pounds, US cups, tablespoons, teaspoons and US sticks.
For the most accurate baking, grams remain the best reference when you have a kitchen scale.
How to Use the Butter Converter
Enter the amount of butter and choose the unit used by your recipe.
The converter instantly displays the same amount in all the other supported units.
If an American recipe calls for sticks, select US sticks. A stick is specifically a US butter-packaging measure; it is not a standard British butter unit.
What Is One US Stick of Butter?
One standard US stick equals:
- 4 oz
- about 113.4 g
- 8 US tablespoons
- 24 US teaspoons
- ½ US cup
- ¼ lb
That relationship is particularly useful when a US recipe asks for one or two sticks but your butter is sold as a metric block.
Why UK Recipes Usually Use Grams
British butter is usually measured by weight rather than in sticks.
That makes an American instruction such as ‘1½ sticks butter’ awkward until it is converted.
One and a half sticks equals:
1.5 × 113.398 g
or approximately:
170.1 g
In an ordinary kitchen, measuring out about 170 g on a scale is usually easier than recreating a US stick measure from a block.
Weight vs Cups and Spoons
Butter is more predictable by weight than many dry ingredients, but weighing it is still the simplest way to avoid uncertainty.
The volume conversions in this calculator are based on standard US butter equivalences:
- 1 stick = ½ US cup
- 1 stick = 8 US tablespoons
- 1 US tablespoon = 3 US teaspoons
For precise baking, use the gram result where possible.
Does Melted Butter Change the Conversion?
Melting or softening butter does not change its mass.
100 g cold butter remains 100 g after it melts.
What can change is how easy it is to measure accurately by volume and how the butter behaves in the recipe.
If the recipe specifies melted, softened or cold butter, follow that preparation instruction even though the converted weight remains the same.
Salted and Unsalted Butter
The calculator uses the same measurement conversion for salted and unsalted butter.
The recipe may need a flavour or salt adjustment when one is substituted for the other, but that does not require a different conversion between grams, ounces, sticks or cups.

Worked Example — 1½ Sticks to Grams
An American recipe calls for:
1½ US sticks butter
One stick is:
113.398 g
So:
1.5 × 113.398 = 170.097 g
Practical result:
about 170.1 g butter
The same amount is also:
- 6 oz
- 12 US tablespoons
- ¾ US cup
- 0.375 lb

Is a US butter stick used in the UK?
Not as a standard UK measurement. British butter is normally sold and measured by weight, which is why converting sticks to grams is useful when following American recipes.
Is it better to weigh butter than use cups?
Yes, particularly for baking. A scale gives a direct weight and avoids uncertainty from packing or measuring a solid ingredient into a volume cup.
