This is the blueberry smoothie bowl I make when I want breakfast to feel like dessert but still function like actual food. Frozen fruit, a splash of milk, and a spoon instead of a straw.

How to Make Thick Blueberry Smoothie Bowl

1. Step 1

Add the milk to the blender first, then the yogurt, then the frozen blueberries and banana on top. This order matters more than it seems like it should, liquid at the bottom helps the blades catch and pull everything down instead of just spinning the frozen fruit uselessly on top.

2. Step 2

Start blending on low, then move up to high once things start moving. You'll likely need to stop and scrape down the sides once or twice with a spatula, frozen fruit sticks stubbornly to the walls of the blender and won't pull itself back into the blades.

3. Step 3

Blend until the mixture looks thick and smooth, almost like soft-serve ice cream. If it's not moving at all and the blender's straining, add milk one tablespoon at a time, not more, this bowl is supposed to be thick enough to eat with a spoon, not drink through a straw.

4. Step 4

Taste it before adding sweetener, blueberries and banana are often sweet enough on their own. Add honey only if it needs it.

5. Step 5

Pour into a bowl and add toppings right away while the base is still cold and firm. Arrange rather than dump, it holds its shape better and looks more appetizing that way. Serve right away with a spoon.

Variations & What to Serve With

Swap the milk for coconut water if you want something lighter and less creamy, though the bowl won't be quite as thick. Almond or oat milk both work well and don't change the flavor much, regular dairy milk gives the richest result. For extra protein, blend in a scoop of vanilla protein powder or an extra spoonful of Greek yogurt. For a superfood boost, add a small handful of spinach, it disappears completely into the purple color and adds barely any flavor. Serve alongside a piece of toast or a hard-boiled egg if you want something more filling for breakfast. This bowl also works well as an afternoon snack on its own, no sides needed.

Key Ingredient Notes & Tips

Frozen Fruit vs Fresh: Frozen fruit is what gives this its scoopable, icecream-like texture, fresh fruit blended with ice just turns watery and thin.
PreSliced Bananas: Freeze banana slices ahead of time in a zip-top bag, a whole frozen banana is a pain to slice and blends unevenly.

Instructions

  1. Add milk to the blender first, then yogurt. Add frozen blueberries and frozen banana slices on top.
  2. Blend on low, then increase to high speed. Stop and scrape down the sides once or twice as needed.
  3. Blend until thick and smooth, similar to soft-serve consistency. If too thick to blend, add milk one tablespoon at a time.
  4. Taste and add honey or maple syrup only if needed.
  5. Pour into a bowl immediately. Add toppings of choice, arranging rather than dumping for best presentation. Serve right away with a spoon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about preparing and executing this recipe perfectly

Use less liquid than you think you need, start with 1/4 cup and add more only a tablespoon at a time if the blender's really struggling. More frozen fruit and less banana also helps if it's still too thin.
Yes, a scoop of vanilla or unflavored protein powder blends in well. You may need an extra splash of milk to keep things moving smoothly once the powder's added, since it thickens the mixture further.
This usually means there's not enough liquid at the bottom for the blades to catch. Stop, add a small splash of milk, and pulse a few times before blending continuously again.
