
Easy Cottage Pie Recipe – Classic British Comfort Food
A comforting British cottage pie with rich beef mince, savoury gravy and fluffy golden mashed potato!
Equipment Needed
- Large deep frying pan or casserole
- Large saucepan
- 2-litre ovenproof baking dish
- Colander
- Potato masher
- Wooden spoon
- Sharp knife
- Chopping board
- Measuring jug
- Kitchen scales
- Fork for roughening the topping

Instructions
- Heat oil and brown beef mince over medium-high heat until liquid evaporates and it's browned, not grey.
- Add onion, carrot and celery; cook 7–8 minutes. Add garlic, then tomato purée and flour; cook 1 minute.
- Stir in stock, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, bay leaf and pepper. Simmer uncovered 20 minutes until thick. Remove bay leaf.
- Boil potatoes 15–18 minutes until tender. Drain and leave to steam-dry for 2–3 minutes.
- Mash hot potatoes with butter, milk, salt and half the cheddar until smooth and fluffy. Don't overmix.
- Spread filling in dish. Spoon mash around edges first, then centre; spread gently. Fork the surface and scatter remaining cheddar.
- Bake 25–30 minutes at 200°C / 180°C fan until golden and steaming hot. Rest 5–10 minutes.
